Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge specific decisions made by the official, echoing the system already in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.
Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
