According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to the automated sawmill invented by Dutch inventor Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a simple trading ship necessitated approximately ten sawyers laboring over 90 days,” notes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Thanks to their speedy mechanical cutter, that turned timber to boards using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders were able to construct ships faster compared to anyone else, which unleashed a century of Dutch maritime, economic and cultural supremacy across the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues Dávila, was “humanity’s initial authentic industrial apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. One component transformed its circular movement to vertical motion to power the saw. Another component changed the rotary movement into a lateral movement feeding the log toward the cutter. A ratchet system shifted the wood forward a measured step per cycle.
